Child Location

How to Track Your Child’s Android Phone Location Without Watching a Map All Day

FlashDroid Team5 min read

Your child leaves school at 3:10.

At 3:25, the map still shows the school.

Do you assume they are still there?

No.

Phone location is a useful safety signal.

It is not a perfect, continuous truth machine.

That distinction is the most important thing to understand before using any child-location app.

Start with what Android location actually gives you

A phone estimates location using combinations of:

  • GPS/GNSS
  • Wi‑Fi
  • mobile networks
  • sensors
  • Google/Android location services

The result changes with:

  • whether the phone is indoors
  • network availability
  • permissions
  • battery state
  • whether the device has been used recently
  • OEM/background restrictions

Even Google Family Link says a child’s location can take time to update and may be unavailable when the device is powered off, offline or not recently used.

Google Family Link can show the location of a supervised child’s compatible Android device when location sharing is enabled.

Google also supports:

  • family places
  • arrival notifications
  • leave notifications

That means many families do not need to begin with a paid app.

Try Family Link first if your need is simply:

  • “Where is the phone?”
  • “Did they reach school?”

Location freshness matters more than the pin

A map pin without a timestamp can be misleading.

Always look for:

  • when the location was last updated
  • whether the phone is online
  • whether the child is moving
  • whether the app reports a fresh or stale point

A five-minute-old point and a five-hour-old point are not the same kind of information.

Why “GPS accuracy” is the wrong promise

Location apps often sound more precise than phone location really is.

Android itself supports approximate and precise permissions, and real-world accuracy varies.

Inside a building, dense city area, parking structure or low-signal environment, the point may be less precise.

No responsible family-location product should promise:

  • perfect accuracy
  • constant exact position
  • zero delay

Background location has a battery and platform cost

Android treats background location as a sensitive capability.

Google’s Android documentation notes that apps using location outside foreground use cases require specific background-location permissions and that Play policy restricts background location to core functionality.

The more often an app requests location, the more battery/power-management trade-offs matter.

That is one reason “refresh every second forever” is not a sensible default family-safety goal.

Safe zones are often more useful than a continuous location feed

Most parent questions are event-based:

  • Did they reach school?
  • Did they leave tuition?
  • Are they home?

You do not need a constantly moving dot to answer those questions.

A safe zone lets the system watch for a meaningful boundary and alert when the child arrives or leaves.

That is both:

  • simpler
  • less intrusive

Our guide on knowing when your child reaches school is the clearest example.

A realistic setup for a 12-year-old

Places

Create:

  • home
  • school
  • tuition/grandparent home if useful

Alerts

Use:

  • school arrival
  • school leave
  • home arrival

Map

Open only when:

  • the child is late
  • an alert did not arrive
  • there is a genuine safety need

Family rule

Tell the child:

  • location is on
  • what places are configured
  • when you will check it
  • when you will not

That makes the tool easier to live with.

What if the location does not update?

Check in this order:

  1. Is the phone powered on?
  2. Is it connected to the internet?
  3. Is location enabled?
  4. Are permissions still granted?
  5. Does the app show a stale timestamp?
  6. Is the OEM restricting background work?
  7. Restart if needed.

Do not immediately assume the child turned off location.

Technical causes are common.

FlashDroid’s location model

FlashDroid can show:

  • current reported location
  • safe zones
  • arrival/leave alerts
  • recent location history

When the parent has the map open, location can refresh frequently.

It is not designed as constant second-by-second surveillance.

Freshness can vary by:

  • device
  • Android version
  • network
  • OEM background behaviour

For the broader location feature, see FlashDroid’s child-location use case.

Location should support safety, not replace trust

For a younger child, location awareness may be mostly logistical.

For a teenager, the same feature can feel intrusive if the family never discusses it.

Our guide on whether parents should check teen location covers the trust side.

The rule we prefer:

Use the least location awareness that answers the safety question.

Frequently asked questions

Is Family Link location real time?

It can show a child device’s location, but Google says updates may take time and depend on device/network state.

How accurate is Android location?

Accuracy varies by device, environment, permissions and signal. Do not treat every map point as exact.

Does location sharing drain battery?

More frequent background location work can increase power use, which is one reason apps balance freshness and battery.

Can FlashDroid show school arrival?

Yes, using safe zones and arrival/leave alerts.

Does FlashDroid update location every second?

No. It provides current location and safe-zone awareness; freshness varies by phone and system conditions.

Should I tell my child location is enabled?

Yes. Transparent use is healthier than secret checking, especially as children get older.
