Short answer

AI companion apps are designed to simulate an ongoing personal relationship.

They may act like a friend, romantic partner, mentor, confidant or emotional-support companion.

Current independent child-safety guidance is much more cautious about these systems than about ordinary homework assistants.

Common Sense Media currently recommends that social AI companions not be used by anyone under 18.

UNICEF’s June 2026 work also highlights child-rights risks and calls for stronger safeguards and oversight.

Why companions are different

A normal tool might help explain photosynthesis.

A companion is designed to make the user want to return to the relationship.

That can include memory, emotional mirroring, role-play, affection and persistent personality.

Main concerns

  • emotional dependency
  • inappropriate content
  • over-trust
  • disclosure of personal information
  • substitution for real-world support

If a teen is already using one

Do not begin with ridicule.

Ask:

  • What do you like about it?
  • What do you talk about?
  • Does it ever make you uncomfortable?
  • Do you feel you need it?
  • Does it replace talking to people you trust?

FlashDroid’s role

If a family decides an AI companion app should be blocked or time-limited on Android, FlashDroid can apply an app rule. It does not need to read the teen’s conversations to enforce that decision.
