How to Teach Children to Verify AI Answers
Updated
Short answer
Teach one habit:
AI gives you a starting answer. Important facts still need checking.
Use this process:
- Identify the claim.
- Ask what source supports it.
- Check the source yourself.
- Check the date.
- Compare another reliable source.
- Decide whether the answer makes sense.
Ask for a source—but do not stop there
AI may produce a real source, the wrong source, a source that does not support the claim, or even a fabricated citation.
Open it.
Check freshness
For app safety, pricing, laws, health guidance, current events and software features, the date can matter as much as the source.
Prefer primary sources
Use government, official platform documentation, school material, original research and established health institutions when possible.
Make verification a game
Ask:
“Can you find one thing the AI got wrong?”
That teaches skepticism without teaching distrust of everything.
