AI Rules for Kids Ages 9–12
Updated
Short answer
For ages 9–12, move from “use AI only with an adult” toward guided independence.
Use these rules:
- do your own first attempt
- use AI to explain, brainstorm or check
- never paste private information
- verify important answers
- do not treat a chatbot like a therapist or best friend
- tell an adult if an AI response feels frightening, sexual, manipulative or confusing
Use the first-attempt rule
Before asking AI:
“What have you tried yourself?”
AI can then help with hints, examples, alternative explanations, practice questions and feedback.
Separate tools from companions
A homework helper is not the same thing as an AI designed to simulate friendship. UNICEF’s 2026 work on AI companions highlights child-rights risks around relationship-style systems.
Verify before believing
Teach a three-step pattern:
- Ask AI.
- Ask what source supports it.
- Check a trusted source separately.
FlashDroid’s role
Parents can use Android app rules for AI apps when the issue is time or access. The family conversation should still do the main work.
