Should Children Use AI for Homework?

Short answer
Yes—if AI supports learning rather than replacing it and the school allows that use.
Good uses include:
- “Explain this another way.”
- “Give me three practice questions.”
- “Check my reasoning.”
- “Help me brainstorm.”
Poor uses include:
- “Write my essay.”
- “Give me the final answer.”
- “Do my worksheet.”
- submitting AI output as original work when school rules prohibit it
The key test
Ask:
“If the AI disappeared, could the child still explain what they learned?”
If not, AI may have replaced the learning.
Use AI after the first attempt
- Try the work.
- Identify where you are stuck.
- Ask AI for a hint or explanation.
- Finish in your own words.
- Verify important facts.
School policy still comes first.
Better parent questions
Instead of “Did you use AI?” ask:
- What did you try first?
- What did AI help with?
- What did you verify?
- What part is your own reasoning?
